Reading: Ephesians 5:21-24
Look at the command in verse 21: What is the command? Who is it addressed to? What reason is given?
What is the command in verse 22? Who is it addressed to?
What reason is given? How does the wife/husband relationship relate to the relationship between Jesus and the church?
The first command is a general command and teaches some aspect of mutual submission. This could either refer relationships within the church family, like those commands given in 5:1-20, or to those in the biological family (like 5:22-6:4). Either way, it matches the overall theme of the commands in Ephesians in that it calls us to look to the needs of others, even in a way that is self-sacrificial (see also 5:1).
Even if 5:21 refers to mutual submission within the family, Paul nevertheless applies it particularly to the role of wife and then compares the wife/husband wife relationship with the church/Christ relationship. The harder question is how these verses apply in various, sometimes quite challenging circumstances.
If you are a wife: Ask the Lord how these verses apply in your situation. Discuss with your husband or a woman you trust to give wise counsel.
