Questions for observation and application:
What has God made known to us?
What are the phrases which modify this “making known”?
When is this put into effect?
For what purpose?
A mystery in the New Testament is “something which has formerly been kept secret in the purpose of God but has now been disclosed” (F.F. Bruce). Paul expands on this mystery later, especially in 3:1-6, as the inclusion of the Gentiles in the people of God through faith. That’s the “already” part of God’s revelation. But, “when the times reach their fulfillment,” (not yet) all of creation experience the cosmic and work of God.
Paul has now listed several spiritual blessings which are of enormous benefit to those individuals who put their trust in him. But it’s good to remember that the gospel is good news for all of creation, that God’s plan and purposes are all encompassing.
